Alt & Order is in development. This field guide describes the intended product behavior, not instructions for an available release.
Free: establish an inventory
Install the Free edition when released, inventory local PDFs, inspect supported image placements, and record editorial decisions. Free does not change public access or block publication.
Pro: configure a release policy
Choose a WCAG policy, assign reviewer permissions, verify private storage and delivery, then enable enforcement on supported publishing paths. Start with a staging site and representative media.
Checks and human review
Automated findings are evidence, not a conformance verdict. A presence check can find missing alt text. It cannot judge whether the description communicates the right information.
PDF structure checks may inspect tags, document language, or text availability. Reviewers still need to assess reading order, meaningful descriptions, and other contextual requirements. Exact checker coverage will be published with the release.
Image decisions attach to usage context as well as the file. An image may be decorative in one place and informative in another.
Publication and protection boundaries
Pro is designed to block supported WordPress publication workflows until required findings and reviews have a permitted disposition. Approval is tied to a file version and policy, with expiry and exceptions where configured.
Protected delivery requires verified private originals and derivatives. Unsupported custom publishing paths, direct server access, and third-party caches need specific integration and testing. The release will document supported paths.
Planned enforcement safeguards must keep existing protected media from becoming public on license expiry. Deactivation and uninstall need an explicit, documented storage transition.
Existing and external media
Existing-library scans
Inventory, background checks, and labels help prioritize review. A scan alone cannot remove public URLs or cached copies. Protection migration must account for derivatives, usages, redirects, and cache behavior.
Remote images and PDFs
Monitoring records the source and checks for change. An authorized private snapshot brings a particular file version into the controlled workflow. Neither approach gives control over the original external host.
Selectable WCAG policies
Pro plans to support WCAG 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2 with A, AA, or AAA targets. A selected target does not mean every criterion is automatically tested.
Rule packs identify their version, source criteria, automated coverage, manual review requirements, and known limits. Administrators adopt reviewed updates and can assess affected media before policy changes take effect.
The update process is: monitor authoritative standards; assess relevance; implement and test; release a signed/versioned rule pack; review impact; administrator adoption and targeted rescanning.
Multisite and reviewer roles
Pro plans network-level policy inheritance and visibility, with site-scoped queues and permissions. A site should not access another site’s private media or review evidence merely because it shares a WordPress network.
Separate upload, review, exception, and policy administration permissions. Document who may approve their own uploads and who may accept an exception.
AI assistance and data
Optional OpenAI and Claude connections are planned for drafts such as alt text and long descriptions. A person reviews and accepts a suggestion; generated text cannot approve a file.
Before enabling a provider, administrators must choose what content may leave the site, review provider terms and retention, set access and cost controls, and communicate the policy to editors. Core review must work with AI disabled.
